The Texans did not so much draft Julius Welschof as overpay for him, 81 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Clark. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the offensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Jared Verse in Round 1, Pick 23 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
In No. 24 they get a sticky cover corner. More want than need.
Byron Murphy II in the 33rd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Legette in pick 59, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Payton Wilson come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had cheaper options than Malik Mustapha at pick No. 123, and it noticed. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They liked Jaheim Bell enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 127. It fills a real need, too.
Braelon Allen at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: De'Corian Clark at Round 7, Pick 19 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Julius Welschof at the 248th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
