Some picks age like wine; Julius Welschof at the Round 7 slot will need to, sitting 81 spots clear of his grade. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Corley. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 24 they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
In No. 25 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Troy Franklin in Round 2, Pick 27, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had Payton Wilson higher than slot 85, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Malachi Corley still on the board at pick No. 123. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid up for Malik Mustapha at slot 127 when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They let Braelon Allen come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Blake Watson all the way to the 239th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Julius Welschof at pick 248 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
