Somebody took the Texans to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the McLachlan reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Getting Murphy II where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
In the 24th pick they get a bendy edge with upside, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Chop Robinson in Round 2, Pick 1, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Byron Murphy II higher than pick No. 59, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roman Wilson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on James Williams in slot 123; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A conviction pick on Jaheim Bell at the 127th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Frank Gore Jr. went about where he belonged in pick 164. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Blake Watson at Round 7, Pick 19 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tanner McLachlan at pick 248 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
