Houston Texans

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a D.

Future D

Somebody took the Texans to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the McLachlan reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Getting Murphy II where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 13
In No. 23 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Jared Verse · DE-EDGE · rank 16
In the 24th pick they get a bendy edge with upside, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 38
They paid sticker price for Chop Robinson in Round 2, Pick 1, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 43
The board had Byron Murphy II higher than pick No. 59, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.22 · Pick 85 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 83
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roman Wilson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · James Williams · S · rank 134
A reach on James Williams in slot 123; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Jaheim Bell · TE · rank 140
A conviction pick on Jaheim Bell at the 127th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 171
No drama and no debate, Frank Gore Jr. went about where he belonged in pick 164. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.19 · Pick 239 · Blake Watson · RB · rank 226
Blake Watson at Round 7, Pick 19 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.28 · Pick 248 · Tanner McLachlan · TE · rank 267
Tanner McLachlan at pick 248 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
