There is conviction, and then there is this. The Dolphins took Caden Curry a full 36 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Landing Lance that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 18 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that.
In pick No. 30 they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Sonny Styles in the 32nd overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dillon Thieneman slipping to No. 43 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
Keionte Scott at the 87th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Sam Roush at slot 90 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; Ted Hurst went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Caden Curry at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Bryce Lance still on the board at the 130th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Beau Stephens. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They did well to land Charles Demmings in pick 152, just ahead of his grade. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A reach for Cole Payton in pick No. 188; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had Jadon Canady higher than the 227th pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They liked Trey Zuhn III enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 238. A need, and now a little less of one.
