The trade table was where it all came apart. The Texans shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
They are betting Hartman proves the room right and everyone else wrong. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Pearsall. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 28 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jared Verse slid further than he should have, and slot 29 is lovely value for the edge rusher. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A conviction pick on Trey Benson at the Round 2 slot that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Leonard Taylor III in the 61st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Christian Mahogany in the 90th pick, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Beau Brade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Payton Wilson at slot 128 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
They let Nehemiah Pritchett come to them and pounced at the 154th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Ricky Pearsall in pick No. 234 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Sam Hartman at the 238th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
