The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Blake Watson slide 42 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
If Thomas pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The Green pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, tight end and other spots still on the board.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a blindside protector at fair value.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No drama and no debate, Jaden Hicks went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Renardo Green at safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
They paid sticker price for Ray Davis in the 91st pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jarrian Jones in pick 126. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Javon Foster at par in No. 128, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in the 133rd overall pick with a little surplus value in Tyrone Tracy Jr.. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Jalyx Hunt graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Nathan Thomas at pick No. 169, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trey Taylor at slot 202 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
The board fumbled Blake Watson all the way to the 245th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ryan Watts in pick 255 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
