New England Patriots

A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B+.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Nick Nash; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 137 spots ahead at Round 4, Pick 2. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

Skattebo at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.19 · Pick 19 · Josh Conerly Jr. · OT · rank 45
In the 19th pick they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 37
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Derrick Harmon · DT · rank 33
Nothing to complain about; Derrick Harmon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 44
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Warren. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Donovan Ezeiruaku · DE-EDGE · rank 75
Donovan Ezeiruaku at No. 44 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 40
A slide stopped in pick No. 53, with Jihaad Campbell worth more than the price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 69
Deone Walker in the 67th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 173
A real head-scratcher, Emery Jones Jr. in the 79th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Nick Nash · QB · rank 240
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nick Nash. It fills a real need, too.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Nohl Williams · CB · rank 239
Nohl Williams in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 202
Seth McLaughlin at pick No. 219 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 178
Taking Cam Skattebo in No. 220 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · RJ Harvey · RB · rank 300
RJ Harvey at slot 238 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
