The Commanders went off the board in a big way for David Walker, 143 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
Getting Phillips where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
So much rides on David Walker that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th pick they get a problem off the edge, a steep price for the projection.
Isaiah Bond in slot 61 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Darien Porter at pick 79 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the 148th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Ollie Gordon II all the way to pick No. 207, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Jaishawn Barham at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
LaJohntay Wester slipping to No. 250 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
