When a board-topper like M.J. Devonshire slides to Round 6, Pick 41, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They will need Washington to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 56 with a little surplus value in Edgerrin Cooper. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Blake Corum in pick No. 87, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tahj Washington at Round 5, Pick 38 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, M.J. Devonshire in slot 216, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and JD Bertrand was the payoff at the 233rd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Josh Proctor in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
