Priorities are a choice, and the Packers made a strange one, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE in the 88th overall pick with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots crying out for the pick instead. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Dial falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
They will need Colson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Quinyon Mitchell at the 25th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 9; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Junior Colson at pick No. 57 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick 88 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Caelen Carson at the 91st overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Cole Bishop at No. 126, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jaylen Wright at slot 168 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 6 slot, where Marcellas Dial graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Erick All at the 216th pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had cheaper options than Trevor Keegan at the 243rd overall pick, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Demani Richardson in pick No. 251 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
