You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Sam Hartman in the Round 7 slot.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Landing Tuimoloau that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in No. 36. A minor need, but a need all the same.
JT Tuimoloau slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 7 is lovely value for the edge rusher. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quinyon Mitchell in pick 71 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Troy Fautanu in the 100th overall pick says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ben Sinnott in the 107th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Jamari Thrash in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had cheaper options than Christian Mahogany at pick 185, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at slot 228, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
