The Vikings spent real capital to be 33 picks early on C.J. Hanson, and the board is going to hold them to it. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Polk value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get a difference-maker at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at the Round 1 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
In No. 27 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
A tidy little value on Darius Robinson in Round 2, Pick 11, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Ja'Lynn Polk, who had no business lasting to the 90th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mekhi Wingo in the 108th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had MarShawn Lloyd higher than pick 112, and the running back fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Foster at slot 129 is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 148 with a little surplus value in Tommy Eichenberg. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Good price on Dallin Holker in Round 5, Pick 21, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sione Vaki in the 167th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in the 177th pick: Dwight McGlothern for less than the market said. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They paid sticker price for Jaden Crumedy in No. 226, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They left a pile of value on the table to take C.J. Hanson this early at the Round 7 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 7 slot, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
