Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Vikings spent No. 232 on Jaylon Hutchings, a name most had 121 spots down the list. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
Everything downstream of Michael Penix Jr. depends on Michael Penix Jr., and the building knows it. On value alone, Pritchett makes the weekend a net positive.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 7 they get a No. 1 receiver. A real need, handled.
In pick 11 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 23 they get a premier pass rusher, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value with a capital V on Khyree Jackson in the 106th overall pick, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They did well to land Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 8, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Khristian Boyd at slot 146 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Dylan Laube in Round 5, Pick 21, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Marist Liufau in pick No. 167; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Circle this one: Luke McCaffrey at the 177th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Nehemiah Pritchett at the 182nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Nathaniel Watson at the Round 7 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Garret Greenfield is a better player than No. 230 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
