If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Jaylan Ford at the 119th pick is 86 spots clear of where he belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. However the rest shakes out, Rouse at that price is a win they earned.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Maason Smith well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached a country mile for Johnny Wilson at Round 3, Pick 35, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into Jaylan Ford at slot 119, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy bit of business in the 174th overall pick, where Walter Rouse graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dominique Hampton in pick No. 216 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A real head-scratcher, J.J. Weaver in No. 233 is miles ahead of his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Evan Anderson in pick 244 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
