Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Chargers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Reaching for Barner left real value on the table behind him. Landing Wilson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at slot 37, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
T'Vondre Sweat in the 56th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Mike Sainristil in Round 3, Pick 22 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bucky Irving at the 93rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let a wide receiver like Roman Wilson reach Round 4, Pick 5 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Ben Sinnott at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They jumped the gun on AJ Barner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Blake Watson at par in slot 226, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
