The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
The McCaffrey pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
Jayden Daniels at the 2nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mike Sainristil. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cooper Beebe in the 72nd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Luke McCaffrey in Round 3, Pick 37 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in pick No. 111 leaves tight end, edge rusher and other spots for later.
They jumped the gun on Tykee Smith, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Magee went about where he belonged in No. 161. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Tylan Grable at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for Austin Reed at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
