There is conviction, and then there is this. The Dolphins took Kimani Vidal a full 54 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while quarterback, edge rusher and other spots went begging. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 21 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid a round early for Michael Hall Jr. in the 66th pick, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A surprising call. With quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still to address, they spent the 104th overall pick on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
A reach on Kitan Oladapo in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No drama and no debate, Tykee Smith went about where he belonged in pick No. 158. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Cornelius Johnson at slot 184 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kimani Vidal at No. 198 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Matt Lee at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
