Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Dolphins spent the 239th overall pick on Tahj Washington, a name the board had a full 140 spots lower. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
So much rides on Patrick Paul that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
They liked Patrick Paul enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 3. It fills a real need, too.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on Mohamed Kamara at pick 90, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid up for Darius Robinson at the 105th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 155 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
JD Bertrand in the 186th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tanor Bortolini well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tahj Washington at the 239th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
