There is reaching, and then there is Jack Westover at pick No. 241. The Dolphins jumped the board by 80 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 31 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Zach Frazier at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 94 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kitan Oladapo at the 123rd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Khristian Boyd well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Tahj Washington, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
JD Bertrand in the 197th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jack Westover in slot 241 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
