There is reaching, and then there is Jonah Elliss at the 55th pick. The Dolphins jumped the board by 35 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Dolphins indulged a want in Solomon while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open.
If Jordan Morgan and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
Jordan Morgan in the 35th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A big swing on Jonah Elliss at the Round 2 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Mekhi Wingo in slot 90, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at Round 5, Pick 22, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Tahj Washington at the 184th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Evan Williams at No. 198 that the board grades a round light. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A real head-scratcher, Matt Lee in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
