The Dolphins torched the value chart for Carson Steele, taking him 85 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in the 31st overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A curious use of slot 94. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
A tidy little value on Elijah Jones in pick 124, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Tykee Smith in pick No. 158; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Tahj Washington at the 176th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Drake Nugent this early at the 184th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Evan Williams at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Carson Steele well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
