It is the swing that defines the weekend: Tykee Smith in the 124th overall pick, a good 36 spots before the room expected him. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Patrick Paul, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
A wild overpay on Tykee Smith in pick 124, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Dwight McGlothern in Round 5, Pick 22 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A reach on Tahj Washington in No. 176; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Drake Nugent at the 184th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kendall Milton at Round 6, Pick 23 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Kalen DeLoach in pick No. 241, and that is fine. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
