The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Dolphins reached some 56 spots for Tykee Smith, and value like that does not grow back.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Braden Fiske went about where he belonged in slot 55. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A curious use of pick No. 90. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
Tykee Smith at the 104th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy little value on Kitan Oladapo in No. 158, a step better than break-even. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A straight-up fair deal on Tahj Washington at Round 6, Pick 9, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Drake Nugent a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They liked Kimani Vidal enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 241. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
