The Dolphins did not so much draft Tykee Smith as overpay for him, 56 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The Dolphins indulged a want in Solomon while a need in quarterback, edge rusher and other spots stayed open. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Braden Fiske in the 55th pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in No. 90 leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Tykee Smith at the 104th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Mustapha a notch or two before his time. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
No drama and no debate, Dwight McGlothern went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 26. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on Tahj Washington in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Drake Nugent, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They went early on Kimani Vidal in Round 7, Pick 21, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
