Nobody else had Andrew Raym anywhere near slot 198. The Dolphins did, by 41 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Braden Fiske at pick No. 55, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A surprising call. With quarterback, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent slot 94 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
A wild overpay on Tykee Smith in the 124th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Khristian Boyd at the 158th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Malik Mustapha in No. 176 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tahj Washington. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Andrew Raym in pick 198 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Miyan Williams at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
