Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Dolphins spent the 104th overall pick on Tykee Smith, a name most had 56 spots down the list. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Washington at that price is a win they earned.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Jordan Morgan went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 3. A need, and now a little less of one.
Braden Fiske at pick 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jonah Elliss in slot 90 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Tykee Smith in the 104th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Malik Mustapha at the Round 5 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tanor Bortolini. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Khristian Boyd in pick 184 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value with a capital V on Tahj Washington in the 198th overall pick, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kimani Vidal at Round 7, Pick 21 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
