You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Matt Lee at pick 241, roughly 34 spots before his name belonged.
It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 31 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Braden Fiske at the 55th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
Ben Sinnott in pick 124 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at the 158th pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malik Mustapha in the Round 6 slot. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They took Tahj Washington at par in Round 6, Pick 9, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Kendall Milton in the 198th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Matt Lee, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
