The rest of the league had time to spare on Tykee Smith; the Dolphins did not wait, grabbing him 22 spots ahead at the 138th pick. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 21 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Michael Hall Jr. a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A curious use of the 104th overall pick. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
A real head-scratcher, Tykee Smith in pick 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
They liked Malik Mustapha enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 158. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Cornelius Johnson at Round 6, Pick 9 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Drake Nugent in pick 198; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They jumped the gun on Kimani Vidal, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
