There is reaching, and then there is Tanor Bortolini at the Round 4 slot. The Dolphins jumped the board by 56 and dared it to prove them wrong. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Simpson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The Dolphins indulged a want in Solomon while a need in quarterback, edge rusher and other spots stayed open.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Morgan at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Michael Hall Jr. at the 55th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in slot 94 leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Cole Bishop at pick 100 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kitan Oladapo at safety with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open.
Tanor Bortolini in No. 133 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylin Simpson at pick 158 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 184, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Kendall Milton at par in No. 198, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 241st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
