The Dolphins went off the board in a big way for DeMonte Capehart, 79 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still on the board. They went 2 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 21 they get a ballhawk on the outside. More want than need.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 2 slot on Javon Solomon with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Stefon Thompson well ahead of where he belonged. The roster logic is harder to follow.
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in the 186th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jalen Green a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tanner McLachlan in slot 242 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
