The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Blake Watson went at the Round 7 slot, a good 41 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The Johnson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid up for Jaylen Wright at slot 56 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cedric Gray at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Delmar Glaze in pick 174; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cornelius Johnson at pick No. 216 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Julian Pearl at Round 7, Pick 13 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Blake Watson at pick 244, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
