Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Isaiah Davis, the No. 155 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 218.
The cost of the Gray reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 27 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Cooper Beebe at par in Round 2, Pick 30, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cedric Gray well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 90. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Cornelius Johnson graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Blake Watson was the payoff at pick 216. The roster fit checks out.
Isaiah Davis in the 218th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nick Samac at the 226th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Ryan Watts at the 233rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quiet steal in pick No. 244: Jordan Whittington for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
