After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Murphy falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Morgan went about where he belonged in pick No. 36. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Nubin. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 67th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy little value on Cade Stover in slot 78, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 100 with a little surplus value in Brenden Rice. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Josh Newton at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 152 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Grayson Murphy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
