The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Vaki.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They are betting Coker proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Rome Odunze at the 11th pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
In pick 23 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Jordan Morgan in No. 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Braelon Allen at the 103rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Javon Solomon all the way to pick No. 137, and they scooped it up. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
You do not let a safety like Sione Vaki reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Curtis Jacobs at slot 193 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A wild overpay on Jalen Coker in Round 7, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
