The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Cole Bishop, the No. 130 name on the board, in slot 182. The final tally is a middling C.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Morgan at Round 1, Pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let Troy Franklin come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked J.J. McCarthy enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 35. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Brenden Rice in the 66th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Trey Benson at par in slot 68, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Mike Sainristil in the 104th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jacob Cowing in pick No. 136 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cole Bishop at No. 182 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Curtis Jacobs still on the board at No. 229. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
