The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Josh Proctor, the No. 187 name on the board, in Round 7, Pick 4.
Spending an early pick on TE-EDGE with quarterback and running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. If Jones pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Bottom line, with Jer'Zhan Newton leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a wrecking ball inside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Amarius Mims in slot 27 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Brian Thomas Jr. in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bralen Trice at pick 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ricky Pearsall. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mike Sainristil at No. 90 is the proof. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE and leaves quarterback and running back untouched.
Cam Hart at the 139th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Christian Jones at the 182nd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nothing to complain about; Michael Barrett went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Somehow Josh Proctor was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Brevyn Spann-Ford was the payoff at the 232nd pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
