After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will need Laube to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Cooper pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 20 they get a long-term answer under center, reach and all. A real need, handled.
They barely believed it either: Edgerrin Cooper still on the board at No. 67. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jonah Elliss at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaden Hicks in the 84th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Matt Goncalves in slot 100, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Dylan Laube at the 139th pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in Round 5, Pick 16, with Jaylin Simpson worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cornelius Johnson in Round 6, Pick 31 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
