The Packers spent real capital to be 32 picks early on Dominique Hampton, and the board is going to hold them to it.
On value alone, Haynes makes the weekend a net positive. The Packers indulged a want in Wilson while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 9 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor itch, scratched.
A curious use of the 58th pick. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Payton Wilson did not.
Steal is underselling it; Christian Haynes at the Round 3 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at the 91st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on James Williams in pick No. 126; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Value said wait; Tanor Bortolini in pick 169 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dominique Hampton at the 202nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Fair-plus on Caedan Wallace, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Tylan Grable at the 245th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Emani Bailey at slot 255 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
