When a board-topper like Michael Pratt slides to slot 179, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. They are betting Knight proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cooper DeJean at No. 41 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Zach Frazier at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaden Hicks at pick 85 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Patrick Paul here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trey Benson in the 103rd overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Mohamed Kamara went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 26. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Christian Jones in slot 137 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Tommy Eichenberg all the way to the 166th pick, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
Luke McCaffrey in pick 169 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A quarterback of that caliber at the 179th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Joe Milton III in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Nathaniel Watson in No. 219, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 20, with Tylan Grable worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had cheaper options than Tyrice Knight at pick No. 243, and it noticed. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A quiet steal in slot 245: Dominique Hampton for less than the market said. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
C.J. Hanson in the 255th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
