Somebody in No. 202 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Jacob Cowing, the No. 147 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They are betting Hartman proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Gray pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and interior defensive lineman still on the board.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Javon Bullard at pick No. 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in slot 42; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Frazier. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach for Mike Sainristil in No. 64; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A surprising call. With tight end and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent the 88th overall pick on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
They paid sticker price for Dominick Puni in pick 91, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Mohamed Kamara in the 126th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cody Schrader at Round 5, Pick 33 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jacob Cowing in Round 6, Pick 27, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at pick 219, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A quiet steal in pick No. 245: Tylan Grable for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Trey Taylor at the 255th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
