Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent slot 255 on Jaylon Hutchings, a name most had 99 spots down the list. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Gray pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Travis. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Braden Fiske in pick 58 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Payton Wilson in No. 64 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kris Abrams-Draine at Round 3, Pick 25 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Cedric Gray with edge rusher unsolved.
A reach for Will Shipley in slot 94; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A curious use of the 118th pick. Edge rusher needed the pick; a safety in Cole Bishop did not.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Elijah Jones graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Christian Jones in pick 132 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tip Reiman at No. 169 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steal is underselling it; Jordan Travis at the 192nd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cornelius Johnson at pick No. 202 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Caedan Wallace in Round 6, Pick 33, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Good price on Nathaniel Watson in pick No. 215, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, C.J. Hanson well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Tarheeb Still at par in Round 7, Pick 15, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Evan Anderson in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaylon Hutchings at the 255th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
