You could see the war room lean forward. Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at slot 126 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Every board in the league had Vidal lower, and that gap is the story. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Javon Bullard at par in pick No. 41, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They liked Mike Sainristil enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 58. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Payton Wilson at the 62nd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dominick Puni. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 28 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Dadrion Taylor-Demerson adds a safety while edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Christian Jones in the 165th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Joe Milton III in No. 169, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Nathaniel Watson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Nothing to complain about; Caedan Wallace went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Kimani Vidal at slot 219, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Jared Wiley was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 8, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trey Taylor at pick 245 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
The board fumbled Daijahn Anthony all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
