The tape said wait; the Packers did not. Trey Taylor went at the Round 7 slot, a good 42 picks before the board was ready.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Wilson. Adding Budda Baker by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Joe Alt at pick No. 5 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Graham Barton slipping to the 41st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They jumped the gun on Christian Mahogany, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Isaac Guerendo in pick 114 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach for Ben Sinnott in pick No. 116; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Mohamed Kamara enough to skip the value, taking him in the 118th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on Jarrian Jones in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kitan Oladapo is a better player than slot 169 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Johnny Wilson in Round 5, Pick 35 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tanor Bortolini in the 172nd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 192 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They let Trente Jones come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Curtis Jacobs in pick No. 212. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Value with a capital V on Jaylan Ford in pick 221, a genuine coup. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They reached a country mile for Trey Taylor at the 227th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They took Jalen Sundell at par in No. 245, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Sam Hartman in Round 7, Pick 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Daijahn Anthony at slot 256 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Jordan Whittington was the payoff at the 257th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
