Somebody in pick 58 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Kool-Aid McKinstry, the No. 24 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will need Watson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Taking Kool-Aid McKinstry in No. 58 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 64th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Fair-plus on Patrick Paul, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
They took Dominick Puni at par in slot 88, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Jaden Hicks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Spencer Rattler in Round 4, Pick 21 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Mohamed Kamara in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Justin Eboigbe higher than the 159th overall pick, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Kitan Oladapo, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 34. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Somehow Cornelius Johnson was still sitting there in No. 219, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Jalen Sundell went about where he belonged in the 239th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Daijahn Anthony at pick 245 is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Blake Watson at pick No. 255 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
