Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent the 257th pick on Mason Fairchild, a name most had 83 spots down the list.
The Kneeland value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Hit on Graham Barton and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Good price on Jordan Morgan in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 26. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 88 with a little surplus value in Jaden Hicks. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had cheaper options than Zak Zinter at the 91st pick, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Marshawn Kneeland still on the board at No. 126. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Jarrian Jones in pick 127; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Malik Mustapha in slot 169 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Dylan Laube in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on Joe Milton III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Curtis Jacobs at the 202nd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Cornelius Johnson at pick No. 219 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy bit of business in the 245th pick, where Trevin Wallace graded well above the range. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
No edge and no loss on Jalen Sundell in No. 248; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trey Taylor a notch or two before his time. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Daijahn Anthony at slot 256 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Mason Fairchild in No. 257 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
