The Packers put a flag in the ground for Sam Hartman, 44 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
Cooper DeJean at the 36th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Payton Wilson at pick 58 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid sticker price for Christian Haynes in No. 65, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in pick No. 66; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Max Melton in the 71st pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaden Hicks in slot 91 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had Marshawn Kneeland higher than the Round 3 slot, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in slot 100, with Dominick Puni worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Ray Davis at par in Round 4, Pick 4, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Beaux Limmer went about where he belonged in the 125th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 126 with a little surplus value in Theo Johnson. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jarrian Jones at pick No. 131 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at the 133rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 134 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Isaac Guerendo in slot 136. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Kitan Oladapo at the 144th overall pick that the board grades a round light. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Elijah Jones in pick No. 145 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Hunter Nourzad enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 5, Pick 11. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Mustapha a notch or two before his time. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Khristian Boyd at pick 163 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
AJ Barner in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
They paid a round early for Ty'Ron Hopper in the 171st pick, more than the board wanted. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cornelius Johnson slipping to Round 6, Pick 27 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach on Keith Randolph Jr. in pick 210; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Trevin Wallace at the 211th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
