The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Baylor Cupp at the 255th overall pick regardless, 92 picks early. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
That Johnson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a building block for the line at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
In No. 26 they get an anchor for the offensive line, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 28 they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a true top target.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Edgerrin Cooper for less than the market said. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jaden Hicks at the 88th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Ray Davis in No. 90 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Beaux Limmer in pick 125 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Jarrian Jones in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They did well to land Roger Rosengarten in Round 5, Pick 2, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Malik Mustapha in pick No. 169 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A premium they did not need to pay, Khristian Boyd a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
AJ Barner at the 171st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
They jumped the gun on Ty'Ron Hopper, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at pick 175, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Dwight McGlothern at Round 6, Pick 15 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylan Ford at the 200th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Trente Jones in slot 202 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cornelius Johnson at No. 219 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a running back like Jase McClellan reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Sam Hartman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Jalen Sundell at par in the 245th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Trey Taylor at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They talked themselves into Baylor Cupp at slot 255, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
