For all the boxes ticked, the Packers skipped the loudest one: edge rusher is exactly as bare as it was. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Bortolini pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The McCarthy pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at pick 41 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Payton Wilson in the 63rd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaden Hicks at slot 88 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Braelon Allen in pick No. 110 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Ben Sinnott in No. 124; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Roger Rosengarten in Round 4, Pick 26 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A big swing on Tanor Bortolini at the 169th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trente Jones in No. 202. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, JD Bertrand at Round 6, Pick 44 squarely in line with his ranking. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A slide stopped in pick 255, with Daijahn Anthony worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
