Some picks age like wine; Devin Culp at Round 7, Pick 35 will need to, sitting 49 spots clear of his grade. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
It is not that Wilson is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. That Bishop pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Junior Colson at slot 51 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A want over a need in the 58th overall pick: Payton Wilson adds a linebacker while edge rusher keeps waiting.
The board fumbled Devontez Walker all the way to pick No. 90, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dominick Puni in pick 91. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Beaux Limmer at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
They paid a round early for Javon Foster in the 110th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
MarShawn Lloyd in the 115th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on Ben Sinnott, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Cole Bishop in pick No. 126, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Jarrian Jones at No. 138, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Walter Rouse in slot 154 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brandon Coleman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at slot 169, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Jaylan Ford enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 196. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They robbed the room for Fabien Lovett here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in the 209th pick, where Jase McClellan graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Trey Taylor at No. 219 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They went early on Daijahn Anthony in Round 7, Pick 5, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Trevin Wallace at the 226th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Josiah Ezirim at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jalen Sundell in the Round 7 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Sam Hartman went about where he belonged in the 254th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Devin Culp, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
