Nobody had Devin Culp this high, and it is not close. The Packers reached 50 spots to get him at the 253rd pick. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Cooper pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
On value alone, Johnson makes the weekend a net positive. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left interior defensive lineman open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a blindside protector, outstanding value to boot.
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get an island corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 28 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Value with a capital V on Junior Colson in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Edgerrin Cooper in the 63rd overall pick leaves interior defensive lineman for later.
Christian Haynes at No. 88 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaden Hicks in the 90th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Ray Davis at pick 105 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, a safety that was not the priority.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cedric Gray adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman untouched.
Jarrian Jones in pick No. 138 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with Kitan Oladapo worth more than the price. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
By-the-book stuff, Malik Mustapha at No. 169 squarely in line with his ranking. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They took AJ Barner at par in the 170th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Travis. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tanor Bortolini at pick No. 172 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Brandon Coleman in pick 175 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 181 with a little surplus value in Khristian Boyd. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had cheaper options than Joe Milton III at Round 6, Pick 14, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Trente Jones is a better player than the 202nd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Cornelius Johnson at the 215th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
They liked Trevin Wallace enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 6 slot. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 225th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They reached into another round for Trey Taylor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Sam Hartman at No. 239 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 7, Pick 25 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Devin Culp in slot 253 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Ryan Watts went about where he belonged in pick No. 255. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
